The Medical Journal of Australia reports that the surgical treatment of obesity surgery (bariatric surgery) is the most rapidly growing area of surgical practice in Australia today. This reflects both the ability of obesity surgical procedures to provide a solution to an otherwise insoluble condition, and also reflects changing public attitudes and overall acceptance of what was once considered quite extreme.

Child Obesity Surgery

Two 14-year-old boys have had gastric bands fitted at a Sheffield hospital.
The teenagers had the surgery at the city's Children's Hospital last year and in 2007, health bosses said.
A statement released by Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust said it was experienced in dealing with child weight management.
It added the issue of childhood obesity continued to be a "significant problem" in the UK and such surgery was only carried out as a "last resort".
'Extreme cases'
Gastric bands are normally fitted in cases where other attempts to lose weight have failed.
It involves a fluid-filled balloon being clipped around the upper end of the stomach with a band which restricts the flow of food into the lower stomach.
